Microphones

Microphones on each ear cup are covered by silver grilles. These let the Bose QC3 measure the ambient noise around you and generate a signal that's 180 degrees out of phase—that's physics-speak for a sort of anti-noise that effectively cancels out what you hear around you. On the left ear cup, there's a 2.5mm jack for connecting the included 2.5mm to 3.5mm gold-plated cable; you can plug the 3.5mm end into any audio source. There's a power switch on the right ear cup, and the top of the ear cup actually houses a proprietary rechargeable battery, which you can remove and place in the included AC adapter/charger. I like the idea of a rechargeable battery as opposed to the standard alkalines the previous model uses, but there is the problem that if the battery runs out you can't just grab another at the local store. Of course, you could drop an extra $49.98 on a spare battery from Bose. Bose headphone rates the battery life at 20 hours of continuous playback at normal listening levels.
