Oh So Quiet?(2) The real story is the active noise cancellation, which is excellent on the Bose QC3. The circuitry does an impressive job at eliminating certain parts of noise from things like generators, aircraft, lawnmowers, exhaust fans, and subways. That doesn't mean you won't hear all that noise, but it does reduce it drastically, effectively taking the bottom out of it. The QC3 gives you slightly less physical protection from noise than the Bose QC2, even when you place the headphones properly over your ears to get a seal; the active cancellation, however, sounds just as good. I didn't hear any anomalies or significant background hiss. The noise-cancellation circuitry also amplifies the audio signal enough so that even the weakest portable player will be able to drive the QC3 with no problem.
