The QC3 is an on-ear headset, also known as supraural. But rather than regular donut-shaped pads or flat foam pads, the QC3 has extremely soft leather-covered flat pads with mesh in the middle to let the sound through. The pads are so thick and soft that they actually create a seal with your outer ear, passively blocking more noise than you'd expect. The elliptical pads measure 2.8 by 2.3 inches (HW), and the bose headphones weigh about 5.6 ounces without the cable. The adjustable headband is padded nylon covered on top by leather. Each ear cup swivels 90 degrees so the headphones can fold flat, though the headband itself does not fold.
